Any sports enthusiasts that want a better looking trophy than an old, dried’ stuffed fish? Fabricate the fish to match your story. You can expect to create one larger sculpture (up to 48″) or 2-3 smaller sculptures. You may mount your sculpture on a custom built museum/artist type stand, or swimming in seaweed……or…. Students will learn proper use of a Plasma Cutter in order to cut out organic shapes in steel. This modern tool makes intricate pattern cutting possible and is a huge time saver. We will fire up the forge and hammer hot steel sheets to shape flat fish patterns into 3-D bodies. Realistic details fin and tail details make this a standout project. Grinding and sanding finish work make for a professional artist grade project.
Students are encouraged to bring a few pictures of fish, fish sculpture or paintings for reference. Mimi will provide several different fish patterns as well. Class includes finish options: satin black (indoor/outdoor), clear gloss (indoor), rust (indoor/outdoor), rust with clear top coat (indoor) Walk out with a completed project ready for installation. A limited pallet of fishy color patinas and heat treatment are available if you’d like a bit of color on your steel., you may grind a scale pattern into your fish. Please note: Some of the salmon shown in the product gallery look like flat metal cut outs from a clip art file. In class we will fabricate a fully 3D fish sculpture, not some sad, flat creature.
Please note that the product gallery show salmon pictures from surfing the internet for steel salmon, these are used as a style and technique reference only and are not designs to plagiarize, except if they are mine and you are my student. Studio steel will be happy to host the artists website link when possible to identify him/her.
